JANESVILLE — I-39/90 is closed in both directions between Janesville and Beloit following a major crash.

I-39/90 south is closed at Wisconsin Highway 11 and Avalon Road and I-39/90 north is closed beyond the ramp from County S because of the crash, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The backup extends north as far as Highway 11 east, and video from the scene shows dozens of emergency vehicles on scene and at least one semi jack-knifed in the road as of 3 p.m.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. near County Road S. The Wisconsin State Patrol told 27 News in Madison that “up to 50 cars are involved,” and one person was injured.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, when the first units arrived on scene, Troopers found the interstate blocked in both directions.

Southbound traffic is being diverted at Avalon Road and northbound traffic is being diverted at Shopiere Road.

Travelers are advised to avoid the area, while State Patrol and supporting agencies assist motorists involved, investigate the crash and work to clear the roadway.

This incident occurred during a severe winter weather event with snow, ice and whiteout conditions believed to be a factor in the initial crash.

Updates to this incident will be provided as the situation warrants.
